How Many Cabinets Can You Make From One Sheet of Plywood?

For the base-cabinet carcasses modeled here, one 48 × 96 sheet holds one complete 18, 24, or 30-inch-wide box with two sides, a bottom, two shelves, and two stretchers. The same two-shelf 36-inch box needs two sheets in the SawNest solver. That answer is deliberately narrow: backs, doors, drawers, toe-kick parts, face frames, and finished ends are not included.

The short answer by cabinet width

All four runs use a 48 × 96-inch sheet, 1/4-inch trim on every edge, a 1/8-inch kerf, and measured 3/4-inch side thickness. Side grain is locked with cabinet height; the other parts may rotate. The result is a planning comparison, not a universal cabinet cut list.

What is included in each box

Each scenario uses two 23 1/4 × 34 1/2-inch sides. The bottom is 22 1/2 inches deep and spans the outside cabinet width minus two 3/4-inch sides. Two adjustable shelves are 21 7/8 inches deep and 1/8 inch narrower than the inside opening. Two 4-inch stretchers use the same across-cabinet span as the bottom.

The count excludes material that often differs by thickness or construction: the back, doors and drawer fronts, drawer boxes, toe-kick skin, finished end panels, face frame, fillers, scribes, and installation cleats. Add each real component before treating the result as a purchase quantity.

Why a 36-inch answer changes with shelf count

The two-shelf 36-inch scenario requires two sheets in this repeatable run. SawNest's separate 36-inch project companion intentionally uses one adjustable shelf and fits its six listed parts on one sheet at 74.0% part yield. Both results can be correct because they answer different bills of parts.

Shelf count, dividers, finished ends, and a full-height back are not small estimating details. They add large rectangles and can cross a sheet boundary, so state them before asking how many cabinets fit per sheet.

Do not multiply one-box yield across a kitchen

Two one-sheet cabinet examples do not necessarily require two sheets when optimized together, and a 60% part-area result does not prove that the remaining 40% can hold the next box. Shape and grain constraints determine whether the offcut is usable.

Combine every same-thickness part from the run, keep stable cabinet and part IDs, then optimize the entire group. Put thinner backs, solid-wood frames, and other stock families in separate material groups and reconcile the final whole-sheet count against the drawing.
